BITO produces storage products and workshop equipment, as well as storage and order picking systems for any industry sector. The goal of this project was to rebuild the existing website and make it work for 22 languages in total.
We decided to go for Drupal because of its flexibility, and because of its available modules that can handle multilingual situations. Drupal also has the Automated Web Translation Workflow (AWTW) module, which was a requirement for BITO. It wasn't available yet for Drupal 6, so we updated it ourselves.
Multilingual features
Because the site uses multilingual features in Drupal, everything on the site is translatable. Even menus, the entire structure of the site and its interface can easily be translated.
Thanks to AWTW, the translation process is made very simple. The content of the site is first exported into an .xml file, then translated by an agency or the BITO company for that specific country, and automatically imported into Drupal.
Many advantages
Every country can manage its own site, enabling them to publish country-specific content. The sites can also be managed centrally.
We've made advanced use of taxonomy in the site. E.g. we created specified selection filters that simplify a product search on the site.
We also host all the different sites centrally. On top of building the website, we took care of integrating the existing web shops into the site. Although it is hosted on a different server, it's seamlessly integrated into the site, keeping the URL structures intact for SEO reasons.
